Frontrunners Learn to Run Clinic is a Transformative Experience for Runners
The energy is palpable. A diverse group of individuals, united by a common desire – to run. The Frontrunners Learn to Run Clinic is more than just a training program; it's a testament to the transformative power of community and shared goals. As a first-time volunteer, I was immediately struck by the palpable sense of camaraderie and support that permeated every aspect of the clinic.
Witnessing the Power of Shared Goals
Watching these individuals, some returning to running after a hiatus, others lacing up their shoes for the very first time, was truly inspiring. Their dedication and determination served as a powerful reminder that everyone's journey begins somewhere, and that the process itself is often more valuable than the finish line.
A Brief History of the Front Runners Run Clinic with Rob Reid
TriNerds: About when was the official first Frontrunners clinic?
Rob: The first official clinic, led by Andrea Carey who worked at the store here, started in the early 2000s. Before that, we had a Wednesday night run group, but it wasn't a structured clinic like it is now. It has really expanded since then.
TriNerds: They say Frontrunners is the largest attended run clinic in Canada.
Rob: We're the biggest in Canada! At least, that's what the suppliers who visit running stores across Canada tell us. We seem to have the largest turnout. But I think if you consider the number of runners in Victoria relative to our population size, we'd have the highest number of runners per capita of any city in Canada. That's why a lot of people come here to retire, so to speak. It's the environment, the weather... you see everyone else doing it, so more and more people join in. And since COVID, we've seen a big increase in the number of people getting out and active.
The younger generation is really inspiring. I think they've seen their parents and other role models embrace fitness, and they're following in their footsteps.

The clinic's success is due in no small part to the tireless efforts of its volunteers. Many have dedicated over 15 years to this program, selflessly giving their time and energy to help others achieve their running goals. Their commitment to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment is truly commendable.
At the helm of the clinic is Joe Forster, a seasoned runner with a passion for helping others discover the joy of running. By the end of the program, many runners find themselves covering distances they never thought possible.
A Structured Approach to Running
The Frontrunners clinic caters to runners of all abilities, offering two distinct groups: "First Steps" for beginners and "Next Steps" for those with some running experience. Both groups benefit from structured training sessions, expert guidance, and a supportive community.
Each session begins with a warm-up, followed by a run at a designated pace, and concludes with a cool-down. Joe provides valuable insights on topics such as shoe fit, safety, and training techniques, ensuring that participants have the knowledge and tools they need to succeed.

I Would Prefer a Personal Run Coach
This is common and not a bad place to start either. There are many individual run coach options. You want to make sure that the individual you are working with is well versed as a coach. Identify that there is a structure to the training to prevent injury and most importantly that you work well with your run coach. Start you search for a run coach with TriNerds.
