Frontrunners' Take on the Hoka Speedgoat 6: A New Trail Companion for the Vancouver Island Series

Skip to the Goods:

Is This the BEAST That Dominates the Vancouver Island Series?

Since we got the Hoka Speedgoat 6 in at Frontrunners, I've been asking everyone what their thoughts are. To be honest, many of the opinions are similar, with folks pointing out minor changes. The first thing everyone notices is the slight bit of extra room in the toe box, yet a slimmer fit under the midfoot.

However, many are excited to try something new on the trails and are eager to test them in the Vancouver Island Trail Series. This is the biggest series that Frontrunners leads within the community, bringing runners off the roads and into the trails. The trails on the Island are some of the best to test the power of this shoe, from technical paths to long, flowing hills—not to mention the killer elevation at Mount Washington. If you want to warm up those soul pods to new horizons, this is the series to do it. We would love to hear back what your thoughts are on the Speedgoat 6.

Let's break the Goat Down!

What's New in Speedgoat 6?

Underfoot Experience: The Speedgoat 6 has a new underfoot feel that's more responsive and lighter. Perfect for those who want a springier step without extra weight.

Breathable Woven Upper: Say goodbye to hot, sweaty feet. The new upper material is all about keeping things cool and comfortable.

Lighter Midsole: The midsole is now lighter and more responsive, which means better performance overall.

Internal Chassis: Added for better foot support and stability, giving you confidence on tricky trails.

Dynamic Vamp: This design helps the shoe adapt to your foot, especially during long runs when your feet might swell.

Plusher Tongue: The tongue is now plusher and better at keeping out debris, so you can focus on the trail.

Speedgoat 5 at a Glance:

The Speedgoat 5 has been a solid choice for technical trails. Here are some highlights:

Lightweight and Grippy: Thanks to the Vibram® Megagrip with Traction Lug, this shoe is lighter and offers great traction.

Durable Mesh: The double-layer jacquard mesh is both durable and breathable.

Smooth Ride:The late-stage Meta-Rocker technology helps with a smooth heel-to-toe transition.

EVA Foam Midsole: Provides excellent cushioning and support.

Eco-Friendly: Uses recycled materials, making it a good choice for environmentally conscious runners.

First Impressions from Frontrunners:

Our clients and employees at Frontrunners have been testing the Speedgoat 6, and here's what they have to say:

Toe Box Room: The Speedgoat 6 has more room in the toe box compared to the Speedgoat 5, which many found to be more comfortable, especially on longer runs.

Midfoot Fit: The midfoot is a bit snugger in the Speedgoat 6, which some found to be too tight, especially if they have wider or flatter arches.

Midfoot Cushioning: There's a bit less cushioning in the midfoot area of the Speedgoat 6, which might affect comfort on rough terrain.

Rocker Technology: The rocker technology remains the same, ensuring a smooth transition during runs.

Overall Reception: Despite these changes, many are excited to give the Speedgoat 6 a try. The updates are subtle enough to keep loyal fans happy.

"The new Speedgoat has a slightly wider toe box, but it still maintains a low volume and snug fit in the midfoot. The foam feels firmer—not as soft—with less cushioning under the midfoot, giving it a bit flatter feeling. However, the forefoot and the rocker feel the same." ~ Finn

On the Trail:

Grip and Traction: Both models use Vibram® Megagrip with 5mm lugs, offering excellent grip on loose and technical terrain. The Speedgoat 6’s revised lug orientation promises even better traction.

Cushioning and Responsiveness: The Speedgoat 5 provides reliable cushioning with its EVA foam midsole, while the Speedgoat 6 offers a lighter, more responsive ride.

Fit and Comfort: The Speedgoat 5’s double-layer mesh and gusseted tongue provide comfort, but the Speedgoat 6 takes it up a notch with its dynamic vamp, internal chassis, and plusher tongue.
