Triathlete Hannah Gibson

Meet triathlete Hannah Gibson, her love for triathlon is contagious. No matter if she's racing or not she always has a positive perspective, a smile and razor-sharp focus. Not to mention she's an avid traveler and a continent globe trotter as well as a world-class athlete. We are grateful that she took a moment to get nerdy and share a glimpse into her journey. Not to mention, share some advice for those who are thinking about triathlon for the first time.

How did your journey in triathlon begin?

I’ve been a runner for most of my life - since I was 9 years old. I started with Little Athletics then at high school I used to race at National level on the track in the steeplechase and 3000m. I also did 10km road races then gradually started doing longer distances as I got older. In 2020, I completed my first two marathons. As I was suffering from a running injury last year I was doing a lot of swimming and cycling instead so thought I’d give triathlons a go - now I’m hooked!

What advice would you give to others who are thinking about trying a triathlon for the first time?

My 3 top tips for first-timers would be:

  1. Try not to stress too much when you get to transitions. Try to relax so you can think clearly but also don’t stop to have a drink and a gel - save that for the bike leg!

  2. Get there early to get a good spot on the bike rack - aim to have your handlebars facing the bike exit if possible

  3. Become familiar with the course beforehand and know how many laps to do! It’s easy to go the wrong way when you’re tired

Tell us about your favourite gear you train and race with?

I love my dhb wetsuit - it really helps in the swim and it’s super comfy too. I also use dhb cycling bibs for outdoor rides and I wear a 2XU tri singlet and tri shorts for races. I really like colourful and vibrant swimsuits for training so I’ve got a bit of a collection from Budgy Smugglers - the smugglettes range is great!
