Local Victoria triathlete Mike McDougall is an athlete, coach and is actively helping others achieve their best self. If you train in Victoria then you most likely know of this outstanding individual. Mike knows what it's like to go from an unhealthy weight to finding his optimal and ultimate self. As an ITU athlete, he now is focused on giving back by working with individuals wanting to find a better lifestyle. This is the journey of Victoria triathlete Mike Mcdougal.
Your fire for triathlon not only shines in competition but also in your coaching. What was that defining moment in your journey that persuaded you to compete in a triathlon?
It was based on a suggestion that sparked a memory. I was a very unhealthy weight and was trying to run to lose weight but kept getting injured. Someone suggested I look at triathlon as it would give me a lot of opportunities to cross-train. Hearing those words reminded me how happy I was to see Simon Whitfield win gold in Sidney and how I thought it would be a sport I would like. That was when I started to look into local triathlons.
What is one of your most memorable moments competing?
Oh man, there are so many. I guess I’d have to say during Ironman Canada in 2015, in some of the worse conditions imaginable, after pushing through hypothermia and making it to the run portion I was close to breaking down. At that movement one of my friends in our club/training group was running the other way and we just stopped, Hugged each other, cried on each other’s shoulders, and then carried on. It was exactly what I needed at that moment. Thanks, Val, love you!
Mike McDougall with Coach Nick Patenaude
After competing for some time you decided to enter into the coaching arena. Tell us a little about your decision to begin coaching and a little about your style?
I was given the opportunity to be a club coach with Westshore Triathlon and from there it just progressed. I really enjoyed watching new and experienced athletes progress. As far as my style goes. I’d say I’m a little more laid back than most. I come from a busy lifestyle, a busy career, and a busy family, so I understand how hard the balance is and will always work with my athletes to make sure they are taken care of. I also know coaching is very important to athletes but financially might not be in the cards, so I have a donation-based program to help give everyone the ability to have access to a coach.
Fuck covid-19 Mike McDougall
Many triathletes get a little nerdy when it comes to gear. What is your favorite gear you are using now for training and racing?
Oh man, my power meter. I love the bike portion and cycling in general. The power is a great benchmark that is a constant that gives me a metric to try to always improve. Not to mention to help me set my training zones. Love my power meter.
