A Non-Athletic Beginning

Believe it or not, my younger years were far from athletic. The term 'sporty' was the last thing anyone would use to describe me. Yet, here I am, not a professional athlete by any means, but someone who has developed a professional mindset, tackling ultra distance trail to triathlon.

The Early Days of Confusion and Challenge

My triathlon journey, which I embarked upon at 37, was filled with initial confusion and challenges. Self-coaching led me down a path of slow progress, and my attempt to understand complex training concepts, like heart rate zones, was overwhelming.

Embracing Coaching: A Turning Point

The real transformation began when I acknowledged the need for professional guidance. Coach Nick Patenaude was instrumental in this shift. He guided me from a hesitant beginner to a confident athlete, capable of swimming in open waters and running distances I had never imagined possible.

Training Evolution: From Basic to Customized

Under my coach's guidance, my training evolved from basic routines to customized plans that matched my improving fitness levels. This progression was not just physical but mental, instilling in me a mindset akin to that of a professional athlete.

A Glimpse of My Training Evolution

Early Training:

- Focus on building basic endurance and mastering techniques.

- Gradual increase in training intensity and volume.

Advanced Training:

- Tailored workouts including high-intensity swims and long bike rides.

- Complex interval training and strength conditioning.

Nutrition, Gear, and The Learning Curve

Learning about proper nutrition and investing in the right gear were pivotal. I realized that these elements are as crucial as the physical training itself.

The Power of Community and Consistency.

Joining a community, both in real life and online, was a game-changer. The support, shared experiences, and collective knowledge of the triathlon community played a huge role in my journey.

Your Journey is Within Reach

If there's one thing my story illustrates, it's that your own triathlon journey is never too far out of reach. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone who never considered themselves sporty, triathlon can be your arena for transformation. It's about consistency, learning, adapting, and being part of a community that shares your passion and supports your growth.

The TriNerd I Always Wanted to Be

From a non-athletic background to completing ultra distances in triathlon, my journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. It underscores that with the right mindset, guidance, and community support, incredible transformations are possible. If I can start at 40 you can too.

No matter where you are in your triathlon journey, remember, we at TriNerds are here to guide, inspire, and celebrate with you. Embrace the process, stay consistent, and let the community uplift you. Your finish line, no matter how far it seems, is within your reach.
